What experience do you have?

I have 31 years’ experience teaching chemistry in the independent school sector, at prestigious institutions including Malvern College and Charterhouse. As a former Head of Chemistry, I have extensive experience in curriculum development and study-program planning. For the past four years, I have tutored students globally online. After retiring from classroom teaching in June 2024, I now dedicate my time fully to private tutoring.

What makes your tutoring sessions different?

My tutoring is highly personalised. I take time to understand each student’s strengths and challenges, breaking down complex topics with clear explanations and real-world examples. With a wide range of resources refined over my career, I help students build confidence, deepen their understanding, and achieve their academic goals.

What branches and levels of chemistry do you teach?

I provide tutoring in general chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and analytical chemistry. I work with students at prep school, senior school, and sixth form college levels. My services include preparation for Common Entrance, GCSE, iGCSE, A Level, International Baccalaureate, BMAT, and MCAT exams.

Do you offer other services?

Yes, I offer a variety of additional services, which can be seen on the website.

Do you offer online tutoring as well as in-person sessions?

Absolutely! I offer both online and in-person tutoring. Online sessions are conducted via a video platform with interactive tools, while in-person lessons can be arranged at a mutually convenient location.

Will the online lessons be conducted over Zoom?

Yes, I use Zoom for online tutoring. This platform allows for real-time interaction, screen sharing and the use of a multitude of online tools, ensuring engaging and productive lessons.

Are the tutoring sessions recorded?

For privacy reasons, lessons are not recorded by default. However, if you would like a recording for review or study purposes, I can arrange this with prior consent. Any recordings will be stored securely and only shared with you.

Are you a member of a professional body?

Yes, I am a member of The Tutor’s Association, and I hold an enhanced DBS check, which is updated annually.

What are your safeguarding procedures?

I take safeguarding very seriously. For online sessions, all communication is conducted via secure platforms, and parents or guardians are welcome to be present during lessons. I follow strict privacy guidelines to create a safe and respectful learning environment. For in-person lessons, I meet students in public spaces or at homes with parental/guardian consent.

How do you structure your lessons?

Each lesson is tailored to the student’s individual needs. I typically begin by assessing the student’s current understanding, followed by concept clarification, working through examples, and assigning practice problems to reinforce learning. With my extensive classroom experience, I use a range of resources to ensure lessons are productive, engaging, and stimulating. I also provide study tips and exam strategies.

Do you offer a free trial or consultation?

Yes, I offer a free introductory consultation to understand your goals and assess your needs. This allows us to discuss how I can help you and determine the best approach for your learning.

How long are the tutoring sessions?

Session lengths vary depending on the student’s age and level. Most students prefer sessions between 45 minutes to 1 hour, but I also offer 90-minute or 2-hour sessions for more in-depth learning. I can adjust the duration based on your preferences.

What are your rates for chemistry tutoring?

Rates depend on the level of tutoring. Please refer to the website for detailed pricing information. I also offer discounted lesson packages, most commonly a suite of three, six, nine or twelve lessons.

How do I book a session?

You can book a session by contacting me via email or phone, or through the online booking system available on the website. If booking a suite of lessons, I will explain how to do this in our introductory conversation.

What technology or materials do I need for online lessons?

For online lessons, you’ll need a computer with a reliable internet connection, as well as a webcam and microphone. I will provide all necessary digital resources for real-time teaching and learning.

Can you help with exam preparation?

Yes! I offer comprehensive exam preparation, including reviewing key topics, practice questions, and strategies for tackling various types of chemistry problems. Whether it’s topic tests, mock exams, or final exams, I’m here to help.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule a session?

Sessions can be cancelled or rescheduled in line with the Terms of Service, which are detailed on the website under the Terms and Conditions section.

As Head of Chemistry, I was fortunate enough to have Rob working alongside me in the Chemistry department at Charterhouse school for three years. In this time, I saw for myself the experience he brought to his teaching. The approach he applies when introducing concepts to pupils is rooted in the absolute belief that they can achieve in the subject and that his support facilitates this progress. Rob is equally adept in aiding those who find the subject challenging to achieve their desired outcome whilst also being more than capable of extending the most able beyond their given specifications.

What sets Rob apart is the incredible compassion and patience he brings to his teaching. He understands that a deep understanding in Chemistry cannot be rushed. He gets the balance just right between giving pupils space to consolidate and apply their learning whilst also maintaining momentum introducing concepts in a synoptic manner. Underpinning this is the trust he establishes with his pupils, giving them the confidence to take risks and grow their understanding of Chemistry.

Rob is an outstanding teacher of chemistry. His subject knowledge is first rate and he is innovative with his explanations of complex material.  He has decades of experience in several top Independent Schools and across all courses and examination specifications. He teaches in an engaging fashion and his pupils are always full of praise for his kindness and patience. He is just as successful with high performing pupils, teaching for the top grades, as those who have been disengaged and struggling to get to grips with fundamental principles. He is interested in people and his pastoral care for his pupils also sets him apart.  He comes with my warmest recommendation.
